The Los Angeles Blues weren’t able to hold off expansion team VSI Tampa Bay FC as the team lost 0-1. Tampa’s Brazilian midfielder, Antonio Neto, scored the game’s lone goal in the 70th minute off a chance created by Douglas Dos Santos. This was the Blues first loss of the season.
Tampa Bay controlled the first 20 minutes of the game, but the first chance of the game came to the LA Blues when LA Blues forward George Davis IV was pulled down by Alex Freitas right inside the box in the 21st minutes. Blues captain Allan Russell stepped up to take the indirect free kick, just curling it over the crossbar.
VSI’s first chance at goal was in the 26th minutes when Freitas was played in down the right, only to miss the target with his finish.
With six yellow cards given in the second half, three a-piece to each team, the last 45 minutes was a purely physical battle. Tampa Bay, again, dominated the beginning minutes of the half, with a shot by Dos Santos, which was wide.
The game winning goal came in the 70th minutes as Maurico Salles passed the ball to Dos Santos, who beat his man before cutting back to Neto, who had a low finish 15 yards out.
With 10 minutes remaining, Los Angeles tried to get on level terms with shots on goal by Russell, Stanley and Cortez, but the Blues just couldn’t get one past VSI goalkeeper Alex Horwath. This was the first win in club history for VSI.
The Blues next hosts Orlando City next Wednesday evening at 4 p.m. PT at Sherbeck Field on the campus of Fullerton College.
