Reed was born on February 28, 1987 in Tucson, Arizona. As a senior at Sabino High School, Reed played running back and defensive for the Sabrecats. He was named first-team all-state and a SuperPrep high school All-American at running back. He was first-team all-state as a defensive end from the Tucson Citizen.

After seeing limited time as a freshman, Reed had a career-high eight sacks (sixth in the Pac-10) and 37 tackles in 13 games as a sophomore. His three forced fumbles was the fourth-most in the conference.
As a senior, Reed was named first-team All-Pac 10 after being fifth in the conference with 6.5 sacks and a career-high 47 tackles. He was the recipient of the Tom Hansen Medal, giving to the best student athlete in the Pac-10.
Reed was taken in the second round (42nd-overall) in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Texans.
After seeing limited action to start the season, an injury to starting linebacker Mario Williams threw Reed into the starting lineup for the rest of the season. In 11 starts, Reed finished his rookie season with 45 tackles and six sacks.
He started all 16 games in 2013 and recorded a career-high 56 tackles to go along with three sacks and a pass deflection.
