C.J. Spiller is entering his fifth season with the Buffalo Bills, bursting onto the scene after a breakout 2012 campaign that saw him gain 1,703 all-purpose yards (1,244 rushing, 459 receiving). Spiller, who splits carries with veteran running back Fred Jackson, is one of the most dynamic players in the NFL. On Aug. 6, 2010, Spiller inked a five-year, $25 million deal with the Bills.
Early Years & College
Spiller was born in Lake Butler, Fla., on Aug. 5, 1987. Spiller, a two-sport athlete, attended Union County High where he rushed for 5,511 yards and won state titles in track. Spiller, the No. 1 player in Florida in 2006, went on to Clemson University and rushed for 938 yards in his freshman year. He completed his collegiate career with 4,480 rushing yards and 1,362 receiving yards, while earning MVP honors in the 2009 ACC Championship Game. Many expected Spiller to enter the NFL draft following the following year, but he returned for his senior season. His 7,588 career all-purpose yards are tops in school history.
The Bills selected Spiller in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft (ninth overall). Spiller, who ran a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash, fought for playing time behind Marshawn Lynch as a rookie, but still managed to make an impact. Spiller was named Special Teams Player of the Week for September 2010 after returning a 95-yard touchdown. In 2012, with Jackson nursing injury, Spiller broke out for 1,244 rushing yards and was selected to the Pro Bowl as an alternate. Spiller has amassed 3,015 rushing yards and 1,070 receiving yards, with 17 total touchdowns, in four seasons in Buffalo.
