CAF Champions League Wrap: Esperance go top
Aug 20, 2013 9:56 AM EST
Esperance de Tunis climbed to the top of CAF Champions League Group B with a 1-0 away win at Sewe on Sunday.
The Tunisian side had been languishing in last place by virtue of their head-to-head record prior to their meeting with Sewe, but took a crucial victory in the Ivory Coast to move into pole position for qualification.
A solitary goal from former Sion midfielder Oussama Darragi helped seal the three points for the two-time Champions League winners.
Cotonsport of Cameroon had occupied top spot going into Sunday's fixtures, but were overhauled despite beating Recreativo do Libolo 2-1 in Garoua.
Alex Yougouda Kada opened the scoring for the hosts in the 31st minute courtesy of an assist from Carlain Manga Mbah.
And they would grab their second just two minutes after the break when Ewange Emmanuel Mbongo got in on the act.
There was still time for the Angolan visitors to grab a late consolation, with Ruben Gouveia netting in the 89th minute, but Miller Gomes' side could not avoid a second-straight defeat.
Three qualification games now remain in Group B, with the next round of fixtures scheduled for next month.
