Cameron Heyward is a defensive end for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He recorded five sacks in his first season as starter in 13 games.
Heyward was born on May 6, 1989 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee Georgia. By the end of his high school career, Scout.com ranked him as the 13th best defensive tackle in the nation. He committed to attend Ohio State University.
Ohio State Buckeyes
As a true freshman Heyward made an immediate impact playing on the defensive line. He made 10 tackles that resulted in a loss of yardage and 2.5 sacks. In his four years at Ohio State Heyward made a name for himself when attacking the line of scrimmage and driving his opponents backward. He concluded his career with 37.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Heyward as the 31st overall pick in the 2011 draft. He was the foreseeable replacement for Brett Keisel in the future. The future is now and it seems Keisel won’t be back on the roster in 2014. Fortunately for the Steelers, Heyward had a productive year starting in 13 games opposite Keisel in 2013. As the projected starter in his fourth year Heyward will be expected to seal of the edge in defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau’s 3-4 scheme. He’ll also be responsible for placing some pressure on the quarterback with his athleticism.
