18 women make up the USWNT squad at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
Head Coach Jill Ellis handpicked these players as the ones she thinks give the United States the best chance at bringing home the Gold Medal. Every player is vital to the team. Regardless of how many minutes they play, they each have something special they bring to the table.
Here are characteristics of every single player on the team. You can help your own game by watching these players and learning what makes them the best in the world.

Hope has insane shot-stopping abilities even from close range. She has also improved her distribution and ability to play the ball at her feet.
#2 Mallory Pugh
Youthful energy combined with a mature mind and appreciation for the game.
#3 Allie Long
Holds down the fort in the center midfield. Is constantly defending against the counter attack and switching of the field.
#4 Becky Sauerbrunn
Veteran defender, Becky is the glue of the backline and often co-captains the squad with Lloyd.
#5 Kelley O’Hara
Strong outside defender who has the endurance to get into the attack as well.
#6 Whitney Engen
A solid center defender back up who enables others to heal nagging injuries
#7 Meghan Klingenberg
She is a consistent outside defender who tackles hard and plays bigger than she is.

Julie is a tenacious tackler and wins her battles in the air.

She is a workhorse in the middle of the field. Not afraid to body up on people and make the hard tackles.

As the captain of the squad, she leads by example. Her work ethic is second to none.

Solid defender on the wing, was a big part of last year’s WC-winning squad.

Aversatile player, she can play winger or striker and make a difference at both positions.

Alex uses her patience and speed to get behind the defense and put the ball in the back of the net consistently.

Finesse on the ball and ability to make things happen in the center of the field.
#15 Megan Rapinoe
She is an asset on the wing as she excels at taking defenders on and getting end line to serve crosses in to her teammates.
#16 Crystal Dunn
Her speed and foot skills enable her to get into good positions and her shot is lethal.
#17 Tobin Heath
She’s got moves. She uses her foot skills to put herself in promising positions.
#18 Alyssa Naeher
Alyssa is the backup keeper. She is an excellent decision-maker as all good keepers have to be.
