Bio

Charles Johnson is a defensive end for the Carolina Panthers. He was a third-round pick by Carolina in 2007 after playing two seasons with the University of Georgia.

EARLY YEARS

Johnson was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia on July 10, 1986.

UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA

After recording four sacks and one pass deflection as a sophomore in 2005, Johnson broke out as a junior in 2006. In 13 games, Johnson recorded 44 total tackles and 19 tackles for loss. He was third in the SEC with 10 sacks on the seasons. He also had 10 pass deflection to go with one fumble recovery and three forced fumbles.

CAROLINA PANTHERS

Johnson was drafted in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the Panthers.

With veterans Julius Peppers and Mike Rucker on the roster, Johnson played sparingly his first few years. In his first three seasons, Johnson made four starts and 10 sacks.

As a full-time starter in 2010, Johnson set career highs with 51 tackles and 11.5 sacks, seventh most in the NFL that year. After posting nine sacks in 2011, Johnson set a new career high with 12.5 sacks, ranking sixth in the NFL. He recorded seven forced fumbles and one fumble recovery that season.

Johnson’s 54 career sacks ranks him 23rd among all active players.
