Chilean Primera Division wrap: Universidad edge Colo Colo
Apr 22, 2013 11:16 AM EST
Hans Martinez's acrobatic volley has taken Universidad Catolica into second spot in Chile's Primera Division after a 1-0 win over Colo Colo.
In a tight Santiago derby, Martinez timed his run to perfection to volley home Fernando Cordero's second-half corner, wrapping up Universidad Catolica's third-straight victory and taking them above archrivals Universidad Chile into second position on the ladder.
Universidad Catolica moved up to 25 points after Sunday's win, one ahead of Universidad Chile, who had drawn 2-2 with O'Higgins on Saturday.
After a goalless first half at Estadio Monumental David Arellano, Martinez struck the decisive goal in the 73rd minute for the visitors, leaping high to side-foot Cordero's corner at the top of the six-yard box past Colo Colo goalkeeper Eduardo Lobos.
The victory means Universidad Catolica trail Primera Division-leaders Union Espanola by a point.
Meanwhile, Cobresal claimed a crucial 2-0 win away to Huachipato to move off the bottom of the Primera Division standings above Deportes Iquique.
A penalty from Mariano Torres gave Cobresal a 1-0 lead at half-time and 11 minutes after the break the visitors finished Huachipato off when Alvaro Navarro scored.
In the other match on Sunday, Cobreloa defeated San Marcos 2-1.
