Bio

Chris Johnson is entering his first season with the New York Jets after spending the previous six seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Johnson, who ran a 4.24 in the 40-yard dash, has long been regarded as one of the fastest men in the NFL. He was the league’s leading rusher in 2009 and set a single-season record with 2,509 yards from scrimmage. Johnson signed a two-year deal with the Jets in 2014.

Early Years & College

Johnson was born in Orlando, Fla., on Sept. 23, 1985. He attended Olympia High where he was an All-Orange County selection. He ran for more than 1,000 yards as a junior, while starring on the school’s track squad in the 100 and 200 meters. After graduating, Johnson went to East Carolina University where he started in seven games as a freshman and earned Conference USA All-Freshman honors as a running back and kick returner. He racked up 2,982 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns in four years at ECU.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans selected Johnson in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft (24th overall). Johnson’s blazing speed elevated him to the top of the running back depth chart. He ran for 93 yards in his NFL debut, following that up with a 109-yard performance, en route to his first Pro Bowl selection. In 2009, Johnson posted arguably the greatest season ever by an NFL running back, amassing 2,006 yards on the ground – 5.6 yards per carry – and totaling 2,509 yards from scrimmage. Johnson, after a brief holdout, was rewarded with a four-year, $53.5 million contract extension in 2011, making him the league’s highest paid running back. In six seasons in Tennessee, Johnson put up 7,965 rushing yards and 2,003 receiving yards, while qualifying for three Pro Bowls (2009, 2009, 2010).

New York Jets

The Jets inked Johnson to a two-year deal worth a reported $4 million per year after the Titans released him on April 4, 2014, due to inconsistencies and a perceived lack of effort. In his early days at Jets camp, Johnson is reportedly re-energized and re-dedicated. He is competing for the No. 1 running back job in 2014.
