As dynamic a player as the league has, Chuckie Keeton lasted into the team’s sixth game of the 2013 season before being lost to a knee injury for the rest of the campaign. He makes plays with the pass, the run and a dynamic presence on the field, so his return to health in 2014 should be good news for a team looking to fill plenty of other holes.
Keeton was a fairly well decorated high school player at Cypress Creek High in Texas, passing for 2,389 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushing for 1,023 yards and another 16 scores as a senior. He was listed as one of the top 20 quarterbacks, and 300 players, in Texas as a senior.
It didn’t take Keeton long to get his Utah State career going, playing in nine games, with eight starts, as a true freshman in 2011. He threw for 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns in his debut season. As a sophomore in 2012, Keeton started all 13 games and earned first-team All-WAC honors after averaging 307.1 yards a game in total offense. He was also 18th nationally in passing efficiency after passing for 3,373 yards and 27 touchdowns. Added 619 yards rushing and demonstrated big play ability for the Aggies.
He played in just six games in 2013 after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the first quarter against BYU. Before going down, he completed 136-of-196 passes for 1,388 yards and 18 touchdowns, with just two interceptions.
Though he missed the spring while recovering from his knee surgery, Keeton is expected to be back for the fall. His presence should provide Utah State with a dynamic element at the quarterback spot.
