Clay Matthews Fined $15,000 For Hit On Kaepernick
Green Bay Packers LB Clay Matthews has been fined $15,000 by the NFL for his late hit on San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, according to Albert Breet of NFL.com.
Kaepernick was well out of bounds on the play in question when Matthews came in from behind and dragged him down. It set off a skirmish between the two teams, and Matthews was flagged for a personal foul.
Matthews insists that he’s not a dirty player, but it’s tough to support him in that regard when video evidence clearly proves otherwise. To be fair to Matthews, he does not have a history of playing dirty. However, it appears that his emotions got the better of him when he launched into Kaepernick while he was running out of bounds.
While Matthews’ wallet was hit the hardest, he wasn’t the only player from that game to be fined by the NFL. 49ers LB Ahmad Brooks was hit with a $12,750 fine for a roughing the passer penalty, and WR Anquan Boldin was slapped with a $7,875 fine for a late hit to Jarrett Bush in the third quarter.
The Packers don’t face the 49ers again during the regular season, but there’s a good chance that these two squads will meet up in the playoffs. If that happens, expect the refs and the NFL to keep a close eye on the game.
