The Premier League is coming to an end with only a few games remaining but who will win the Title? In one of the most exciting finishes to the league in a long time, there are three teams still left in the running: Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.
Which Manager will rain supreme on the 11th of May?
Lets start with Chelsea, the start of the season saw the return of the Special One, Jose Mourinho back in blue and ready to make another statement. The bookmakers had them as the favourites for the title and Chelsea have remained near the top all season long. Chelsea though didn't have the strongest start to the season. Winning their first two games they went on a slight slump as they drew against the reigning champions Man United and then suffered their first loss going down to Everton. Mourinho though would bounce back after that defeat, as the London side would go on a 5 game unbeaten run. Which included a 2-1 victory over the star studded Manchester City side. The Blues though would stumble once again as they went down to Newcastle and then soon after that would also lose to Stoke City in a 3-2 thriller. Though Mourinho came back with a vengeance after those losses and this time would go on a 14 game unbeaten run, winning 11 of those matches! Mourinho was starting to prove the bookmakers right. And so were his players too. Willian was proving to be one of the best buys of any club out there, Eto'o was finding some of his old goal scoring form and Hazard was in sizzling form since the season kicked off. Then March came around Chelsea would suffer their fourth defeat of the season losing to Aston Villa. They would follow that with a crushing 6-0 win over Arsenal but then go down 1-0 to Crystal Palace the next game. A John Terry own goal was enough for Crystal Palace to take the full points. They would bounce back with a strong 3-0 performance against Stoke City and then just scrape by against Swansea City with a 1-0 win. Then came the shock of all games as Mourinho was finally beaten at Stamford Bridge in the EPL after going 75 games without a loss as the Blues went down 2-1 to Sunderland. This put Chelsea 5 points behind Liverpool, but Mourinho would pull out all his football knowledge with a smart performance against a high flying Liverpool side that was currently on a 16 game unbeaten run. Some say it wasn't pretty but in the end the history books will write Liverpool 0 - Chelsea 2. That win opened the title race and also left a small gap for Chelsea to have a chance at the Title.
Mourinho's Chelsea have had a great season under The Special One in his return to the Premier League
Liverpool are definitely the team not many but the die hard fans thought would be in the position they are in right now. Rodgers has slowly gotten his message across to the locker room and the vibe at Anfield has definitely been a positive one. A slow start to the season they had too just managing to scrape by in the first few rounds with three 1-0 wins in a row. Then a very entertaining 2-2 draw against Swansea City, that the Reds were fortunate to walk away with a point from. Though this followed with their first loss against Southampton and all this without their star player Luis Suarez who was still serving his 10 game ban from last season. All in all Suarez missed the first 6 games of the season but boy did he make his mark since returning. Daniel Sturridge too was shinning for the Reds this season too as he was the main reason Liverpool walked away with wins in matches that were too close for comfort. Though a shock 3-1 defeat to Hull City and all thought Liverpool would be lucky to get to fourth spot. Though Brendan Rodgers would prove them all wrong as the Reds went on a 4 game winning streak that saw them score 17 goals and reach the top of the table for the first time. Though their time at the top was short lived as two 2-1 losses in a row, would see them drop off to 3rd place as the year ended. Both the losses came against Manchester City and Chelsea too, the teams that were both favourites to win the title this season. Then 2014 came and Liverpool went on an incredible run that the club hadn't seen since the glory days of the 80's. The Reds went 16 games unbeaten which saw them go on a 11 game winning streak! Suarez, Sturridge and the youngster Raheem Sterling were leading the way for Rodgers, with Jordan Henderson and their long serving captain Steven Gerrard also contributing to their success. Liverpool needed to finish off the season without losing any games to clinch the title. They would beat Manchester City 3-2 in a thrilling match at Anfield. Though with three games left to play Liverpool would face Chelsea. A draw and two wins would be enough to see Rodgers lead his team to a Premier League title after 24 years since they last won the division title. Rodgers though would be outwitted by his close friend Mourinho as Liverpool suffered a 2-0 loss.
Liverpool would grow under Brendan Rodgers' this season as the Reds come as close as they have ever been to lifting the Trophy
Manchester City began the season under new management as Manuel Pellegrini took over after the departure of Mancini. The Sky Blues would also have a slow start to their season as they would suffer their first loss in the second round to the newly promoted Cardiff City. Pellegrini would bounce back against their close rivals, as City would make easy work over Man United with a strong 4-1 victory. Though just as you were thinking that City were about to kick start their season they would suffer another shock loss this time to Aston Villa. A shaky start for the new manager and his worries would increase as City would once again stumble, this time to Mourinho as the Chelsea manager would take the victory 2-1. Once again though Pellegrini would bounce back from that defeat with a stunning performance that saw City beat Norwich 7-0! Then again Pellegrini struggled away from home as he watched his side drop points losing to Sunderland. Then Pellegrini would finally see his team pull it together as they went on a 12 game unbeaten streak. The unbeaten run saw them punish a lot of teams, including Tottenham and Arseanl as they put 6 goals past both London teams. Though this would once again be foiled by Mourinho as City suffered their fifth defeat of the campaign losing to Chelsea at home. Pellegrini would once agin rally his side together and City would go on a 7 game unbeaten run, as well as lift the League Cup after defeating Sunderland in the final. Pellegrini's team was once again looking good as they were set to meet Liverpool and also had two extra games in hand. Pellegrini would stumble once again as Liverpool won 3-2. The title was Liverpool's to win, they just needed a draw and two wins in their final games and it was mathematically impossible to catch them. Though once again Mourinho would step in, this time in favour of City as his team dealt Liverpool a crucial loss. Pellegrini now has the title back within his sites as he needs to lead his team to 3 wins out of the 3 games remaining to win the title on goal difference!
Manuel Pellegrini is having a great debut season as he inches closer to the Premier League Title
So this is where we stand right now. Manchester City have three games to play: Everton away, and two home games against Aston Villa and West Ham United. If they win all three games the title will surely be theirs as the have an Eight goal advantage over Liverpool. Liverpool have two games left: Crystal Palace away and Newcastle United at home. Even if they win both games they will find themselves on level points with City but with a lower goal difference. Chelsea face Norwich at home and Cardiff City away. They need to win both games and also need Liverpool and Manchester City to lose one of their remaining games to lift the title. Looks to be an exciting finish for the 13/14 season as it might come down to the final game!
