Butch Jones announced Tuesday that senior Jacob Gilliam and sophomore Devaun Swafford would receive scholarships.
"First of all, we are excited to say that Jacob Gilliam will be going on scholarship at the University of Tennessee," Jones said at the Big Orange Caravan stop in Johnson City, Tenn. "Very well deserved and very earning of that. One of the rewards of being a football coach is when you can call him and his family and say that you have worked yourself into a scholarship. That's what our program is all about.
"Being in the Tri-Cities, I would also like to announce that Devaun Swafford will also go on scholarship. We have asked a lot about him and he's earned that."
Gilliam has played in two games in his four-year career, one being the fourth quarter of the Alabama game last season and the fourth quarter against Kentucky in 2012. The Farragut, Tenn. product saw significant time with the first-team offensive line unit throughout Team 118's spring practices.
Swafford, from the Tri-cities area and played at Dobyns-Bennett, played on special teams and defensively in nickelback schemes as a freshman. Swafford recorded 17 tackles (11 solo) last season, forced a fumble and played in all 12 games.
The Kingsport, Tenn. native also scored two touchdowns - and they were highlights to remember.
One TD was on an interception return at Florida:
And the other on a blocked punt recovery vs. Georgia:
