Jun 25, 2014 6:48 PM EST

Colombia are through to the next round as they made easy work over Japan defeating the Asian side 4-1. Juan Cardardo opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Colombia earned themselves a penalty after a Ramos was brought down after Konno was late with the tackle. The penalty was well take as the keeper dived the wrong way and the ball thundered into the back of the net. Japan did manage to give themselves some hope though as they would equalise in the final minutes of the first half. Honda crossed the ball in from the corner of the box and found Okazaki who headed home with a great diving header. The scond half though was all Colombia as the South American side regained their lead in the 55th minute as Martinez drilled the ball low into the bottom right corner. Japan to their credit did push forward but would then be caught on the counter attack and Martinez scored Colombia's third of the match. Then to send Japan home with more to think about the Colombians netted their fourth deep in injury time. 4-1 to Colombia as they are now set to meet Uruguay in the knockout round.

Greece have also done the impossible as they too would qualify to the knockout stages after a very late Penalty kick saw them fight back and beat Ivory Coast 2-1. The Ivorians just needed to get a draw and they would be guaranteed a spot into the next round, while Greece had to win to keep their World Cup dreams alive. Greece took the game to the Africans and would take the lead in the 42nd minute. Andreas Samaris would fire the Greeks into the lead as he intercepted a bad pass by the defence and slotted over the keeper and give his team hope of progression. Though Bony would have other ideas as the Chelsea forward would draw his team level int he 74th minute sending the Ivory Coast fans into a frenzy of celebration. Though the Greeks would have the final say as Samaras was brought down inside the box in the 93rd minute of the match and the big Hellenic forward would make no mistakes and he would fire the Greeks into the knockout round as Ivory Coast were left to ponder their mistakes that cost them a spot in the final 16.

Argentina had already guaranteed themselves a spot into the next round but Nigeria still needed either to draw or win to guarantee their spot unless Bosnia would do them a favour and defeat or draw with Iran. In a thrilling match which saw end to end action Argentina would walk away with a 3-2 win. Messi would score two goals and Rojo would get the winning goal to make it three wins out of three games. The Argentines played a good open game but they have shown they are vulnerable at times. Though as we now enter the knockout stages I believe they will are now full of confidence and ready to show that they are a true contender to make it all the way. The Nigerians even though they lost it didn't need to worry them as Bosnia would defeat Iran 3-1 which ensured that the African nation would go into the round of 16.
