France celebrate as their team qualify for the next round

France came out with only attack on their mind. After their strong showing in the first match, they continued on this great form against the Swiss. Olivier Giroud would open the scoring in the 17th minute with a well timed header. The corner was delivered in from the right side towards the penalty spot. Giroud timed his run and would head the ball towards the top right corner. The keeper stretched but didn't manage  to get enough of a hand to it to push it clear. Then almost immediately from the kick off Benzema won possession back for France and fed Matuidi as he ran into the box down the left side. He cooly picked his spot and slotted the ball in between the keeper and the near post. 2-0 and France in the drivers seat after only 18 minutes.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring for the French in the 17th minute.

The French then continued their onslaught of the Swiss defence as they searched for their third of the match. Benzema and Giroud would both have chances from distance but fail to find the target. Then in the 30th minute France would find themselves awarded a penalty kick after Benzema was tripped by Djourou. Benzema stepped up but his low shot towards the left post was blocked by the keeper. Cabaye would follow up the rebound but blast his shot into the crossbar. Still 2-0 and the Swiss had their keeper and the crossbar to thank. Though minutes before the halftime break France would make it three as Valbuena found the back of the net after France countered after defending a Swiss corner. Giroud made a great run down the left side and squared the ball across the goals where Valbuena met it in his stride and slotted home from close range. 3-0 and still 45 minutes left to play and the Swiss with a mountain to climb in the second half.

The second half was once again all France as they kept knocking on the front door looking to expand their lead. Then in 67th minute Benzema would finally get his goal after getting free behind the defence and staying onside. The floating ball was played in by Pogba and Benzema would turn and shoot putting the ball between the legs of the keeper making it 4-0. Sissoko made it 5-0 later as he scored his first goal of the World Cup after Bezema found him unmarked on the right side. He placed his shot across the goal and into the bottom left corner. The Swiss fought back valiantly in the last 10 minutes as they did manage to pull two goals back but it was too little and too late as the French ran away with the game winning 5-2.

Costa Rica shocked everyone as they guaranteed themselves a place in the next round with a 1-0 win against Italy. The Costa Ricans ere already flying high after their 3-1 defeat of Uruguay and continued their fine form with a strong performance against Italy that saw them qualify for the next round after 23 years.

The Italians started strong and Balotelli should have given the Italians the lead early on but his chip shot over the keeper would fail to find the net. The Milan striker would have another great chance as he found himself in space at the top of the box, but his shot would go just wide of the left post. Then moments before the halftime break Costa Rica would find the back of the net. Diaz got himself into a nice position on the left side and his cross would find Ruiz. The Costa Rican would meet the ball perfectly and head into the back of the net near the far post. 1-0 at halftime and the Costa Ricans were riding high on cloud nine.

The second half saw Italy press Costa Rica deep into their own half but fail to create a chance that would get the Europeans back onto level terms. A Pirlo free kick would climb over the wall but not past the keeper as he dived well and fisted the ball clear. Though Itaiy were knocking on the door of the Costa Rican goal, they failed to find the target. Now Italy need to win their final game against Uruguay to ensure they progress to the next round.
