The match of Connor Halliday and pass-happy Washington State coach Mike Leach certainly has paid dividends.
Though you could see the match might work given Halliday’s high school work in Spokane. As a high school senior, he completed 310-of-477 passes for 4,198 yards and 43 touchdowns. He was named Tacoma News-Tribune All-State (all classifications) and EvergreenStatePreps.com All-State (4A).
He arrived at Washington State in 2010 and redshirted that first year. In 2011, he appeared in four games, getting one start, but showed what might be lurking under the surface by being named Manning Award National Player of the Week and Bank of the West Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after relieving Marshall Lobbestael against Arizona State and throwing for WSU freshman records of 494 yards and four touchdowns on 27-of-36 passing in the win.
In 2012, he played in nine games, starting five, throwing for 1,874 yards, 15 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on 151-for-290 passing. He also put up four 300-yard passing games and had several outings with multiple touchdown tosses. All that set the stage for 2013, where Halliday found his groove under Leach.
Halliday started all 13 games and would set a WSU single-season record with 4,597 passing yards, second-most in Pac-12 history. He would hit on 449-of-714 passes, both WSU and Pac-12 single-season records, while delivering 34 touchdown passes, tying Ryan Leaf (1997) for most in WSU single-season history. Along the way he recorded nine multiple-touchdown games, including a quartet of fourth touchdown games, nine 300-yard performances, four 400-yard yard games and two 500-yard games. He also had 15 touchdown passes of 20-plus yards. The down side? He tossed 22 interceptions in 2013.
