Cool Soccer Tricks: Beardsley Shuffle
Young soccer fans may not know much, if anything, about former Liverpool star and England international Peter Beardsley, but that doesn't mean they can't learn from the little master.
His trickery and footballing intelligence made him a terrific deep-lying Number 10 before the position even became popular. He was the perfect foil for goalscorers like Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer and still claimed his fair share of spectacular strikes, many from outside the box.
In this video, top soccer trainer Paul Spacey digs out a move Beardlsey used successfully countless times to outfox an onrushing defender and make himself the space to pass or shoot.
It is simple but devastatingly effective - just like Beardsley.
The Player Behind the Move
Beardsley took the long, hard route to the top after being released by his hometown club, Newcastle United, as a youngster.
He was transferred to Canada's Vancouver Whitecaps on 9 September 1982, a rare move at the time, particularly for such a young player. But his stay in North America was brief - only weeks after arriving in Canada, he was on his way back to England when Ron Atkinson brought him to Manchester United.
However, it was another false start and Beardsley was on his way back to Vancouver on a free transfer on 1 March 1983. Again his transatlantic adventure was a short one. He was on the move once again on 23 September 1983, this time to join Newcastle, the team that had snubbed him as a teen. He was on his way. It was with his next club, Liverpool, however, where Beardsley really hit his stride.
During his Anfield career he played in 175 matches and scored 59 goals, but it was his vision, guile and all action style of play that endeared him to the club's faithful. In his long career, dating between 1979 and 1999, he represented his country 59 times, once as captain.
He played for Newcastle United, Liverpool and Everton and also had spells with Carlisle United, Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Fulham, Hartlepool United and the Melbourne Knights in Australia. And you can be sure he used this move at every club he played for.
