Copa Sudamericana: Velez Sarsfield 2 La Equidad 1 (4-2 agg)
Oct 02, 2013 11:17 PM EST
Velez Sarsfield scored two late goals to secure a 4-2 aggregate victory over La Equidad to advance to the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals.
The Colombian visitors had edged ahead on away goals just before half-time on Wednesday when Jose Moreno Mora scored to level the tie at 2-2.
But after Lucas Pratto drew Velez level on the night and put them ahead on aggregate in the 71st minute, Mauro Zarate scored with five minutes remaining to complete victory for the hosts and sent them into the last eight.
Velez joined fellow Argentine clubs Lanus and River Plate in the quarter-finals but benefited from a red card to La Equidad's Darwin Andrade in the 61st minute on Wednesday.
When Andrade copped a second yellow card at Velez's Estadio Jose Amalfitani, the hosts took control of the match.
Ten minutes later, Fabian Cubero set up Pratto for the equaliser and in the 85th minute, Hector Canteros' clever chip found Zarate in behind La Equidad's defence and the 26-year-old striker burst into the box to finish past visiting goalkeeper Diego Novoa and put Velez 2-1 up on the night.
Having won 2-1 away to La Equidad in the first leg a fortnight ago, Velez completed a fairly comfortable aggregate win over the Colombians.
