Crazy Prediction Of Former Jet

Created on Jul. 08, 2013 11:23 PM EST

Former New York Jets Cornerback Ray Mickens tweeted his prediction for the upcoming NFL season. His crazy prediction was that the Jets would win 11 games.

Mickens was a role player with the Jets when he played for them, 1996 to 2003. In two of those seasons, he started more than 10 games.

He was a member of the 1998 Jets team when they advanced to the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos. The Broncos, the eventual Super Bowl Champion, defeated the Jets 23-10.

Mickens' prediction could be coming from noticing a similarity to that 1998 team.

His tweet on his twitter account,@raymickens24, stated: “My prediction, Jets win 11 games this year, for all of y'all that sprained ankles last yr jumping off the bandwagon.” He tweeted this on June 29.

One problem with Mickens' prediction is that he is not taking into account the past two seasons.

The past two seasons, the Jets combined to win only 14 games. This includes the team winning a disappointing six games this past season after Head Coach Rex Ryan, the team’s head coach since 2009, proclaimed prior to the season that he was coaching his best team in New York.

Last season was beyond a disaster for the team and fans. The Jets traded its best player, cornerback Darrelle Revis, during the off-season.

The other problem with Mickens' prediction is the current roster.

The Jets will have at least 13 new starters this upcoming season, according to the team’s depth chart on This includes three offensive linemen and seven defensive players.

This also includes starting quarterback Mark Sanchez, as of this moment, who is coming off a terrible season. Sanchez’s season was so bad the Jets chose to draft Geno Smith in the 2013 Draft.

Mickens does not realize that a team with that many new starters is not a playoff contender. Technically, the Jets are in rebuilding mode and it is quite possible that the Jets will have rookie Geno Smith start at quarterback at some point this season.

The Jets schedule this season will make it tough for them to win eight games.

The Jets will be playing five games against four teams that made the playoffs. The New England Patriots will play the Jets twice.

This includes the Jets playing the defending Super Bowl Champions Baltimore Ravens.

The Jets will have to play some of the best quarterbacks in the league this upcoming season. This includes Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

It would take a miracle for the Jets to win 11 games this upcoming season. The only way the Jets will win 11 games is if Sanchez plays on Brady’s level.
