Crew SC Falls Short In Season Opener Versus Dynamo
The intensity was high Saturday night at BBVA Stadium as Columbus Crew SC looked to get their season off on the right foot with an away win against Houston Dynamo. Unfortunately, they fell short as Dynamo notched a 1-0 victory.
The first few minutes went slow as the players looked to settle back in to regular season play. The game didn't start to heat up until the 9th minute of the contest, when Kei Kamara fed a through ball to midfielder Ethan Finlay. Sadly, Finlay's attempt at a shot from the top of the box was stopped by a collision with Dynamo defender Raul Rodriguez.
Dynamo then attempted to take control of the game, and in the 23rd minute a free kick by Brad Davis almost falls in the net, but a nice save wide by Crew SC's Steve Clark kept the game from getting off to a rough start. From then on, it was Dynamo that kept on the offensive push for most of the first half, eager to put in the first goal. The teams remained neutral at halftime.
Crew SC went started off the 2nd half like an entirely new team, settled in and ready to attack. Multiple shots occurred in the first few minutes, including a near goal off of a diving header from Kamara. The game then took a turn for the worse as Dynamo forward Giles Barnes scored the first goal off of a great set up by Kofi Sarkodie in the 66th minute of the showdown.
All eyes shifted to Crew SC's attack, looking for a response. It almost came in the 71st minute, as a beautiful pass from Kamara to Federico Higuain set up a great opportunity, but Higuain's shot bounced off the crossbar in what would've been the equalizer. Crew SC then went desperately to the net, attempting to capitalize on any opportunity the had to get a shot on goal. Alas, Crew SC's 18 shots to Dynamo's 8 was not enough to win the game. Despite the loss, Crew SC proved to the fans their potential this season. It's going to be a good year.
Crew SC looks to notch their first win in their home opener on Saturday, March 14th against Toronto FC.
