David Cobb is a running back for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers of the Big Ten Conference. He was a 2014 pre-season third team All-Big Ten selection by Phil Steele. He is the cousin of Minnesota linebacker Damien Wilson.
Cobb attended Ellison High School in Texas. A three-year starter and an All-District selection as a senior, Cobb ran for 2,946 yards and 35 touchdowns in his career. During his senior campaign Cobb ran for about 1,400 yards and tallied 17 rushing scores on the year.
Cobb played right away at Minnesota in 2011, finishing the season with 10 carries for 57 yards. In 2012 he saw limited action in five games, with a rush for eight yards and a catch for three yards against Iowa.
In 2013 Cobb emerged as the Gophers’ featured back. His 1,202 rushing yards were the 27th most in the country. Cobb became the first member of the Minnesota program to rush for 1,000 yards since Amir Pinnix in 2006. His six 100-yard rushing games were the most in one season by a Minnesota player since Laurence Maroney finished with eight in 2005. Minnesota went 5-1 in games where Cobb ran for more than 100 yards.
Cobb’s seven rushing touchdowns in 2013 were tied for the most total touchdowns scored on the team. Perhaps his most impressive performance of the season was rushing 27 times for 101 yards against the top-ranked Michigan State defense.
