David Wilson is entering his third season with the New York Giants following an injury-plagued 2013 season that threatened to derail his career. Wilson, a shifty and explosive running back, underwent neck surgery last January and seems slated for a new role as a change-of-pace back in 2014. Wilson was expected to be the team’s starter before going down, and he’ll still have a chance to compete for the job in training camp.

Early Years & College

Wilson was born in Danville, Va., on June 15, 1991. He attended George Washington High where he rushed for a school-record 2,291 yards and 35 touchdowns as a senior. Wilson qualified for the 2009 Junior National Team and was considered the top-rated prospect in Virginia. After graduating, Wilson went to Virginia Tech where he excelled at football and track. He was named 2011 ACC Offensive Player of the Year after gaining 1,709 yards, while helping the Hokies to a 2011 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship.

New York Giants

Wilson was selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft (32nd overall), jumping up the draft board following an impressive Combine. He struggled with fumbles early in his rookie season, but flashed too much potential to stay on the bench. On Dec. 9, 2012, Wilson set a Giants record for all-purpose yards in a single game with 327 yards, serving as a running back and kick returner. Wilson played in just five games in 2013 after incurring spinal stenosis. He is expected to return for training camp in 2014.
