DE Lorenzo Mauldin Vital As Louisville Preps For ACC

Louisville's hiring of Bobby Petrino certainly got people talking during the offseason, but the Cardinals other big coaching signing may have the biggest impact on the team this season. Todd Grantham will come in and install his 3-4 defense in his first season as the Louisville defensive coordinator.

Grantham wants to forget about the season Georgia’s defense had in his final year as the Bulldogs defensive coordinator, but he also wants to make sure the Cardinals can duplicate the defensive success from last season in a new conference.

Louisville’s defense was stout against American Athletic Conference teams last year, finishing with the top total defense in the nation. However, short of UCF, the offensive talent in the conference wasn’t on the same level as the powerful offenses the Cardinals will see in the ACC.

One thing Cardinals fans can look forward to is the play of Lorenzo Mauldin. The former defensive end, who will miss spring while recovering from shoulder surgery, will move to outside linebacker in Grantham’s system.

The linebacker position will be an interesting fit. Mauldin has the potential to thrive in the system like some other linebackers have. When Grantham was at Georgia, Jarvis Jones was able to shine at the linebacker position. In addition, Mauldin has always gotten after the quarterback, which is what Grantham likes to do. He already has said he plans to constantly pressure the offense.

Mauldin finished last season with 12 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He certainly will be a big part of the defense. The only question is who else will step up for Louisville.
