Desmond Roland started 2013 as a backup, but the promise he’d shown as a sophomore (6.5 ypc) was soon too much to keep on the bench. By week five, he was in the starting lineup and hasn’t looked back as he prepares for the 2014 season.
Rushed for 3,000 yards in his final two seasons at Lake Highland High School in Dallas, Texas, and scored 54 times during his career as a prep. Coming out of high school, he was tabbed a receiving prospect and was rated the 15th best by Scout.com. Played basketball and did track and field as a prep.
Played as a true freshman in 2011, rushing for 95 yards on 17 carries. Got more action his sophomore year, getting 46 carries for 301 yards and four touchdowns in 2012.
All that prepared him for a breakout 2013. Worked his way into the starting lineup by the seventh game and finished the season with 811 yards on the ground and scored 13 times. He also became a receiving threat with nine catches and three touchdowns. Opened his starting streak with a 219-yard, four touchdown effort against Iowa State. Also broke 100 yards (144) against Oklahoma to end the regular season. In his last seven games, he rushed for 664 yards and 11 scores.
