Smith attended Washington High School in Ohio. A two-time first team All-State selection, Smith tallied 110 catches in his career for 2,119 yards. He also caught 24 touchdown passes, the second most in school history. Smith also excelled in track and basketball as a prep athlete.
Smith played in all 13 games as a freshman in 2011, tallying 294 receiving yards on 14 catches. Smith was responsible for the biggest play of the season for the Buckeyes as he caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Braxton Miller with only 20 seconds left in the game to knock off 15th ranked Wisconsin by a score of 33-29.
In 2012 Smith finished second on the Buckeyes in catches with 30 and receiving yards with 618. The six touchdowns scored by Smith were the most for a receiver on the team. He used his track speed to score catch-and-run touchdowns against CAL for 72 yards and Michigan State for 63 yards. Smith’s average of 51.5 receiving yards per game was the ninth highest in the conference.
In 2013 Smith earned an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten nod from the conference’s coaches. He caught 44 passes for 660 yards on the season. He also reeled in eight touchdowns. A Kenny Guiton pass to Smith for 90 yards against the California Golden Bears set a new Buckeye record for longest play from scrimmage.
