Bio

Doug Free is entering his seventh season with the Dallas Cowboys after a bounce-back 2013 season put his career back on track. Free, who has struggled with inconsistent play throughout his tenure in Dallas, shifted from left tackle to right tackle and was rated as one of the top players at his position, according to ProFootballFocus.com. He accepted a salary cut to avoid being waived prior to 2013.

Early Years & College

Free was born in Manitowoc, Wisc., on Jan. 16, 1984. He attended Lincoln High where he earned All-State honors while playing both defensive tackle and tight end. He was named team captain and Defensive Lineman of the Year as a senior. After graduating, Free went to Northern Illinois University where he was a red-shirt freshman and third-string left tackle before earning a full-time spot in 2003. He earned first-team All-MAC honors and honorable mention All-American as a junior, while placing on the Outland Trophy watch list.

Dallas Cowboys

Free was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 NFL draft (122nd overall). Free was slated to start in his rookie season, but a serious knee sprain relegated him to just one game of action, one quarter to be exact. Free had a hard time finding the field in 2008, until an injury to starting right tackle Marc Colombo opened up the door for him to start seven games in 2009. He switched positions again in 2010, this time moving over to left tackle and starting all 16 games. However, poor play dotted his resume over the next two seasons – he surrendered the most sacks of any Cowboys offensive linemen in 2012 – and rose more questions. Free, now back at right tackle, is coming off a resurgent 2013 season.
