Brown was born on August 30, 1985 in Richmond, Virginia. At Hermitage High School, Brown played tight end because he only weighed 250 pounds coming out of high school. He was considered a three-star tight-end by Rivals.com.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
After redshirting his first year, Brown caught three passes for 64 yards. His lone TD came against Western Michigan on his first career catch. As a sophomore, Brown was moved to offensive tackle and started every game.
As a junior and senior, Brown earned second-team All-ACC honors and voted Offensive Lineman/End of the Year by the Richmond Touchdown Club in both seasons.
Brown became the second Virginia Tech offensive lineman ever drafted in the first round since 1992 when the Texans selected Brown with the 26th-overall pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
He became the first rookie lineman to start every game for Houston since Chester Pitts in 2002. In 2009, he played left tackle and helped QB Matt Schaub led the NFL with 4,770 passing yards and set several franchise records.
He was named second-team All-Pro in 2011 and first-team All-Pro in 2012. He was selected for the Pro Bowl in 2012 and 2013.
