Dylan Thompson is a quarterback for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks of the Southeastern Conference.
Thompson starred in basketball and football at Boiling Springs High School in South Carolina. He was selected for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas as a junior as Thompson threw for 1,300 yards and rushed for 500. He dealt with a separated shoulder during his senior season and was ranked a two-star prospect by both Rivals and Scout. He received scholarship offers from fellow SEC schools Kentucky and Vanderbilt. Meanwhile he received a basketball scholarship offer from Louisiana Tech. ESPN.com ranked Thompson the number 94 quarterback of the 2010 class.
After redshirting in 2010, Thompson appeared in four games for the Gamecocks in 2011. Thompson scored his first collegiate touchdown with an eight-yard touchdown run against Kentucky. He was named to the Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll. In 2012 Thompson made two starts to fill in for an injured Connor Shaw. He participated in 11 games and threw for 1,027 yards and 10 touchdowns while only getting picked off twice.
His first career start came against East Carolina where Thompson threw for 330 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Against UAB Shaw completed a 94-yard touchdown pass to Damiere Byrd. The pass was the fourth longest completion in program history. Thompson started in the Gamecocks’ win over Clemson and earned the team’s MVP award that game for his performance, throwing for 310 yards and three touchdowns. He came up big in the Gamecocks’ Outback Bowl win over Michigan, completing seven of 10 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. His 32-yard touchdown strike to Bruce Ellington with just 11 seconds left in the game lifted South Carolina to a 33-28 victory. He was once again named to the Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll.
In 2013 Thompson participated in 10 of the team’s 13 games, making one start. He threw for 783 yards and four touchdowns while getting picked off three times. Thompson’s only start in 2013 came against Missouri as he threw for 222 yards before Shaw took over in the third quarter. Thompson was named to the Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll for the third straight year.
