Eric Decker is entering his first season with the New York Jets after spending the past four seasons with the Denver Broncos. Decker, a rising star wide receiver, is coming off a career year in 2013 after hauling in 87 receptions for 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns and helping lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl. On March 12, 2014, Decker signed a five-year deal worth a reported $36.25 million.
Early Years & College
Decker was born in Cold Spring, Minn., on March 15, 1987. He attended Rocori High where he was a two-time team MVP and All-State selection. Decker finished with 2,156 receiving yards and 28 touchdowns for his high school career. After graduating, Decker, a two-sport star (baseball, football) went to the University of Minnesota where he was a four-year starter, making 228 receptions for 3,119 yards and 24 touchdowns. He was drafted by both the Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers in the Major League Baseball Draft.
Decker was selected in the third round of the 2010 NFL draft (87th overall). Despite leading all NFL rookies in receptions in the preseason, Decker was reduced to a special teams role as a rookie. In 2011, Decker started 13 games and returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown. Decker’s role in the offense increased steadily during his four seasons in Denver and he finished with 222 receptions for 3,070 yards and 33 scores.
New York Jets
Decker is being counted on as a vital cog in the Jets’ offense in 2014. He reportedly caught every pass thrown his way in his first practice with his new team, causing quarterbacks Geno Smith and Michael Vick to rave about the Jet’s new weapon.
