FC Dallas Extends Unbeaten Streak to Seven
By Young Kim
Chivas USA felt like they did everything right, but still finished the match with a loss at home as FC Dallas (9-7-6) escaped with a 1-0 victory. The 22-year-old Canadian star, Tesho Akindele, scored the only goal of the match to help extend FC Dallas’ unbeaten streak to seven matches. Chivas USA on other hand are dwelling in a three-game losing streak at sit with a 6-10-5 record.
FC Dallas got on board in the 49th minute after catching the Goats’ backline asleep with their brilliant team work. Fabian Castillo played a clever 1-2 pass with Blas Perez from outside the box to the inside left. Perez then delivered a short cross with his right foot to Tesho Akindele in the box who made the easy tap past Dan Kennedy for the opening goal. This was Akindele’s third goal in four games.
“I think we planned the game really well. It was a very good game for us,” said Chivas USA head coach Wilmer Cabrera. “Overall throughout the year, I have to say this is the best game we have played at home in terms of possession and moving the ball… But at the end it’s not [about] how you play well or when you play better than the other team. It’s if you put the ball in the net. They only had two chances and they put one in.”
The Goats controlled possession for roughly 54% of the match while FC Dallas only had 46%. Chivas USA also completed 454 total passes, 72 more than FC Dallas’ total. The home team showed considerable improvement from their previous two matches as they looked more patient with their ball movement, but ultimately FC Dallas had the finishing product that Chivas USA desperately looked for.
Marvin Chavez found open space for a run until FC Dallas defender Matt Hedges pushed him outside the box. Chavez fell to the ground writing in pain while the referee awarded Hedges with a yellow card. The Honduras international was helped off the pitch to treat the injury but came back on after four minutes.
A minute after coming back on, Chavez got a touch off a pass from Nathan Sturgis and took a shot from outside the box, but the ball sailed wide left.
FC Dallas missed a quality chance in the 32nd minute when Fabian Castillo slotted a pass back to a racing Blas Perez outside the box. Perez rocketed his right-foot attempt, but his shot was too high. Perez took another attempt at goal in the 36th minute when he played the ball off his chest and took a right-footed shot at goal, but Chivas USA keeper Dan Kennedy easily caught the ball.
In the 39th minute, Leandro Barrea turned around and took a left-footed shot from outside the box. Unfortunately his shot went to the top center of goal where it was easily saved by Raul Fernandez.
Akira Kaji created the Goats’ best chance in the second half at the 78th minute when he delivered a perfect cross to an open Erick Torres. "Cubo" was able to get his head on the ball, but he failed to bring it down as his shot attempt went above the bar.
Castillo came close to doubling FC Dallas’ lead in the dying minutes of the match after beating a defender and the goalie off the dribble, but he lacked focus in the finishing product and hit the post at close range.
