FIFA World Cup Qualifying: Lesotho 0 Ghana 2
By Football News
Ghana gave their FIFA World Cup qualification hopes a giant boost by beating Lesotho 2-0 on Sunday to go top of CAF Group D.
Zambia's shock draw with Sudan on Saturday opened the door for Kwesi Appiah's men, who took full advantage, and will look to finish the job and reach the final round of qualifying when they face their group rivals in the final round of games in September.
Despite having nothing to play for, a passionate Neseru crowd cheered Lesotho on at the Setsoto Stadium, although it counted for little as Christian Atsu, on the stroke of half-time, and Asamoah Gyan netted to seal a fairly routine win for the visitors.
After a frantic opening of little quality, Lesotho keeper Mohau Koenane gave his side a scare, spilling Sulley Muntari's long-range effort into the penalty area, although nobody was able to capitalise for Ghana.
However, they would not be denied in the final minute of the first half as Muntari drifted a free-kick into the area and Atsu managed to nod the ball past Koenane for a vital opener.
The visitors could not keep the pressure on after the break, however, and the hosts worked good opportunities at goal, but found Fatau Dauda in inspired form between the sticks for the away side.
And as Lesotho tired, it was Gyan who hit the hammer blow to their chances of sending the home crowd happy, extending his record as Ghana's record goalscorer, which he had set in their previous qualification match against Sudan.
