A lot has changed in football in the USA since the turn of the century. Or has it?
The USMT has the same coach and similarly low expectations.
But at least one person believes the national team is in better hands than it was 10 years ago - Bruce Arena himself.
He was asked at the recent National Soccer Coaches of America convention in LA : "What would you say to yourself now that you needed to hear 10 years ago."
"You're an a*****!" he replied, before hastily adding that it was important to work hard.
In truth, it is a new world compared to when Bruce was The Boss last time around. Christian Pulic was just 41 days old when he took the helm in 1998.
His nearly eight-year run covering two World Cups, highlighted by a quarterfinal dash in 2002, appeared to sew the seeds for a bright future. Now he's taking over U.S. squad in jeopardy of missing the World Cup for the first time since 1986.
