Football.com Statement on the Chapecoense Tragedy
Football.com sends its heartfelt condolences to everyone at @ChapecoenseReal, their families and all those affected by the tragedy in Brazil and around the world.
A plane carrying the first-team squad of Brazilian top-flight team Chapecoense, went down close to the town of Cerro Gordo in the early hours of Tuesday, killing 71 people. Initial reports said there were six survivors, including players and a travelling journalist, but police said one later died in hospital.
Based in the city of Chapecó in the Brazilian state of Santa Carina, Chapecoense were en route to Medellín, Colombia, to play the first leg of the final of this year’s Copa Sudamericana against the current Copa Libertadores holders Atlético Nacional in what would have been the biggest game in the club’s history.
“It’s a very sad day for football fans worldwide,” said Football.com President Nicole Wahab. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the extended Chapecoense families and supporters at this difficult time.”
