Gamecocks RB Davis Could Miss Opener

The South Carolina Gamecocks could be wihtout starting RB Mike Davis for its Thursday, Aug. 27 matchup against Texas A&M, according to CBS Sports.

Davis has been a scratch from practice this week due to a rib injury and head coach Steve Spurrier wouldn't commit to the junior's status heading into next week, CBS said.

Davis is expected to be a big part of the old ballcoach's offense this year. The Atlanta, Ga. Native finished fourth in the SEC with nearly 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns during his sophomore campaign in 2013.

All is not lost if Davis can't go. The Gamecocks feature plenty of depth at running back with two other juniors, Brandon Wilds and Shon Carson.

It's also worth noting that all of this could simply be a little gamesmanship on the part of Spurrier (It certainly wouldn't be the first time). Both Spurrier and running backs coach Everette Sands have said Davis' injury isn't serious, CBS said.

Regardless of the severity, don't be shocked if Davis shares more of the running load than expected on Thursday night. Even with solid depth at the position, Spurrier can't afford to risk further injury to the bellcow of his offense in the season vopener.
