Hayes was born on August 10, 1987 in Greenville, Florida. As a senior at Madison County High School, Hayes had 124 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, and 11 sacks. He was named All-American first-team by Parade Magazine and second team All-American honors by USA Today.
According to Rivals.com, Hayes was a four-star prospect and the third-best linebacker recruit in the nation.
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY
After playing sparingly his freshman season, Hayes started 10 games as a sophomore and recorded 59 tackles and three sacks. He had a career-high 12 tackles against UCLA in the Emerald Bowl.
As a junior, Hayes ranked second on the team in tackles (80) behind Derek Nicholson’s 99. He added a team-high 17.5 tackles for loss and was second on the team with five sacks. He was named to the All-ACC first-team.
TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Hayes was drafted in the sixth round (175th-overall) by the Bucs in the 2008 NFL Draft.
Despite playing in only nine games as a rookie, Hayes took over the starting spot in 2009 and recorded a career-high 98 tackles to go along with three sacks and two interceptions.
In four years with Tampa Bay, Hayes made 42 starts with 251 tackles, seven sacks, and four interceptions.
Hayes signed a one-year deal with the Bears on April 19, 2012.
That season, he made 14 tackles in three starts.
The Jaguars signed Hayes to a two-year, $2 million contract on March 13, 2013.
In his first season with Jacksonville, Hayes made 14 starts. He added 78 tackles, two interceptions and one sacks.
