George Selvie is entering his second season as defensive end with the Dallas Cowboys after short stops in Jacksonville, Carolina and St. Louis. Selvie, a pass-rushing defensive end, has big shoes to fill with the departure of Pro Bowl player DeMarcus Ware, but there is cautious optimism in Dallas. Selvie is coming off a career year in which he started all 16 games and posted a career-high seven sacks.
Early Years & College
Selvie was born in Pensacola, Fla., on March 6, 1987. He attended Pine Forest High where he was named second-team Class 3A All-State while splitting time on the defensive and offensive lines. After graduating, Selvie went to the University of South Florida where he notched first-team All-American (2007, 2008) and first-team All-Big East (2007, 2008) honors. In 2007, he was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year after collecting 14.5 sacks and 31.5 tackles for loss, a school record.
St. Louis Rams/Carolina Panthers
The Rams selected Selvie in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL draft (226th overall). Despite playing in all 16 games as a rookie – registering 21 tackles and 1.5 sacks – the Rams waived him before the 2011 season. Carolina claimed Selive off waivers, but he was released after playing in only two games.
Selvie, who has been criticized for a perceived lack of motivation, found a home in Jacksonville for two seasons. He saw action in 16 games, but his production was minimal. Selvie finished with 1.5 sacks and four tackles before being waived.
The Cowboys took a chance on Selvie, signing him after a rash of injuries had decimated the team’s defensive line. Selvie, originally inked as a training camp body, exceeded expectations in the preseason and made his first NFL start on Sept. 8, 2013. He started all 16 games at left defensive end and turned in the best season of his career, including a two-sack performance against the Philadelphia Eagles.
