Georgetown head coach Kevin Kelly resigned to become defensive coordinator at Ball State, the Associated Press reported Thursday.
Kelly, the Patriot League coach of the year in 2011, and the Hoyas went just 2-9 in 2013. Kelly compiled a record of 24-63 at Georgetown.
Kelly worked with Ball State coach Pete Lembo at Dartmouth in the mid-'90s.
“Been here eight years, going on nine, and it’s just the time where I feel that Georgetown football needs a new energy, new ideas,” Kelly told the Washington Post. “For me personally, this opportunity is something that will help me with my career and my goals moving forward, but Georgetown is an incredible place. It’s very special.”
Defensive coordinator Rob Sgarlata will serve as Georgetown's interim head coach according to the AP.
