In the 2013 draft, the Cincinnati Bengals looked to upgrade their rushing attack to pair with the Andy Dalton and A.J Green tandem. The Bengals already had an experience veteran in BenJarvus Green-Ellis but wanted a change of pace ball carrier. Giovanni showed agility, speed and the ability to catch passes out of the backfield. The Bengals drafted Bernard in the second round. In his rookie season sharing the workload with RB Green-Ellis he accumulated 1,209 yards from scrimmage as a ball carrier and receiver with eight touchdowns in total.
