İlkay Gündoğan was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on 24 October 1990. Primarily a central midfield player, who operates as a playmaker, he is known for his technical qualities, dribbling, accurate passing and creative talents. 

Gündoğan began his youth career with SV Gelsenkirchen-Hessler 06 and also spent time at the youth academies of Schalke 04 and SSV Buer, before joining VfL Bochum in 2005. After working his way through the youth system there and making two appearances for the reserve team, Gündoğan completed a move to 1. FC Nürnberg in 2009. Over the course of the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons, he made more than 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals. His performances attracted the attention of Borussia Dortmund, who signed him in the summer of 2011.
