Don’t let his diminutive size fool you, Jakeem Grant is a bolt of lightning running through defenses. His quickness and sure hands have elevated him to one of the Red Raiders leading receivers in what continues to be a fast-paced, high-scoring offense.
A star at Mesquite Horn High School in Mesquite, Texas, Grant was rated a three-star prospect by Rivals and ESPN.com after earning first-team Dallas Morning News all-area honors. As a senior he rushed for 516 yards and nine scores while also catching 79 passes for 1,306 yards and another 13 scores. He was an all-state selection in football and track and field.
After redshirting in 2011, Grant made an immediate impact in 2012, earning ESPN All-Big-12 freshman first-team honors after a 33-catch, 287-yard, three touchdown debut. He played in all 13 games and started three for the Red Raider. He also tallied two kickoff returns for touchdowns.
In 2013, Grant would raise his game and earn All-Big-12 honorable mention honors. He played in 12 games (eight starts) and recorded 65 catches for 796 yards and seven touchdowns. He was fifth in the Big-12 in receptions, sixth in receiving yardage and eighth in kickoff return average at 21.1 a return. He also finished the season seventh in the Big 12 in all-purpose yardage at 1,273.
Had season highs of nine catches against Kansas State and 99 yards against Oklahoma. Grant should be one of the Big 12’s best and most productive receivers in 2014.
