Japan announce Confederations Cup squad
Alberto Zaccheroni has sprung no surprises in his Japan squad for the FIFA Confederations Cup.
The head coach named his 23-man squad for the upcoming tournament in Brazil on Tuesday, just 24 hours after Japan became the first side to confirm their place at next year’s FIFA World Cup.
Keisuke Honda’s injury-time penalty gave Japan the point they needed to qualify in Tuesday’s home match against Australia and the CSKA Moscow midfielder has unsurprisingly made the cut for their Confederations Cup campaign, which gets underway against Brazil on June 15.
Other notable players involved are Manchester United playmaker Shinji Kagawa and Inter midfielder Yuto Nagatomo.
Defender Maya Yoshida also keeps his place in the squad after a hugely-successful debut season at Southampton.
After their fixture against Brazil, Japan will face Italy four days later before completing the group stage with a match against Mexico on June 22.
