Bio

Jon Beason is entering his first full season with the New York Giants after being acquired in a trade in October 2013. Beason, a run-stopping middle linebacker, spent his first eight NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers, qualifying for three Pro Bowls and twice named All-Pro. Beason was traded to the Giants in 2013 for a seventh-round pick after losing his starting job.

Early Years & College

Beason was born in Miramar, Fla., on Jan. 14 1985. He attended Chaminade Madonna Prep where he played linebacker, strong safety and fullback. He rushed for 811 yards and 12 touchdowns, while making 75 tackles as a senior. After graduating, Beason went to the University of Miami where he accounted for 187 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one interception after shifting from fullback to full-time linebacker.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers selected Beason in the first round of the 2007 NFL draft (25th overall). Beason burst on the scene in Carolina, starting all 16 games and finishing second in NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year voting after compiling 140 tackles. Beason proved to be one of the best linebackers in football, even after temporarily switching from middle to outside linebacker, racking up 541 tackles in his first four seasons. In 2011, the Panthers made him the highest-paid middle linebacker in NFL history, but an Achilles injury ended his season in Week 1. Beason, who also underwent micro-fracture knee surgery in 2012, has had a slow recovery, causing him to lose his starting job twice.

New York Giants

Beason played in 12 games for the Giants in 2013 following a mid-season trade and proved to be a steady contributor at middle linebacker, finishing second on the team with 93 tackles. However, he recently fractured his foot during OTAs and will be sidelined for at least 12 weeks. Beason still expects to be ready for the start of the regular season.
