Julian Green Added to U.S. Friendly Roster
By Young Kim
Jurgen Klinsmann recently announced his roster that will be attending training camp for the April 2 friendly against Mexico.
One of the most notable additions to the squad is 18-year-old Julian Green from Bayern Munich who was granted permission by his club to join the national side. The budding superstar was approved by FIFA on March 24 to play for the U.S. and is looking to earn his first cap.
Since the friendly does not fall on the international break, the U.S. Men’s National Team will be without their Europe-based players. Club Tijuana’s Joe Corona, Hercules Gomez, and Edgar Castillo will not join the team due to their club’s CONCACAF Champions League match on April 1.
Standout players from the January camp like Real Salt Lake’s Luis Gil and Seattle Sounders’ DeAndre Yedlin will be given another opportunity to prove that they deserve a spot on the 2014 World Cup roster. Former Rangers and current Philadelphia Union loanee Maurice Edu will be getting his first call up of 2014.
Regular call ups like Seattle Sounders’ Clint Dempsey and LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan are set to return to the lineup. Dempsey is the only player from the Ukraine friendly who will be joining the squad for the upcoming match.
After scoring two goals against South Korea back in January, San Jose Earthquake’s forward Chris Wondolowski will be given a shot to show Klinsmann that he deserves to play up top. With Jozy Altidore’s ongoing struggle to find the back of the net for Sunderland, a strong showing by Wondo could raise the conversation as to who should be the starting forward for this team.
"Everyone knows the clock is ticking," Klinsmann said in a statement. "This is a huge opportunity for our players to show where they are at and to make their case. We expect them to give a really strong performance against a Mexican team that is now basically coming back on track. They need to prove now that they badly want to go to Brazil."
The Stars and Stripes will meet Mexico on April 2 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona.
