Julius Thomas is a fourth year tight end for the Denver Broncos. He starred as two-sport athlete at Portland State University, earning All-Big Sky recognition in both football and basketball.
Early Days & College
Thomas was born in Stockton, CA on June 27, 1988 and attended Tokay High School in Lodi, CA. He drew only mild interest as a basketball prospect following graduation and chose to continue his playing career at Portland State. He excelled on the court, leading the Vikings to two NCAA tournament berths and setting school records with a .663 shooting percentage and 78 career wins.
After his eligibility expired as a basketball player, he surprised many by opting to join the football team and became an instant success, earning All-Big Sky First Team honors as a tight end. During his only season playing on the gridiron at the college level, he hauled in 29 receptions for 453 yards and two touchdowns.
Thomas graduated from Portland State with a degree in business and participated in the East-West Shrine Game in front of multiple NFL scouts, snagging a touchdown reception during the contest. He drew attention from several teams, and the Broncos selected him in the fourth round with the 129th overall pick of the 2011 NFL draft. Injuries marred his first two seasons in the league, as he only caught one pass during that time period and missed the entire 2012 campaign.
Once he finally regained his health and returned to the field for the 2013 season, Thomas became one of Peyton Manning’s favorite targets as the Broncos made an impressive run to Super Bowl XLVIII. He garnered Pro Bowl honors for the first time in his short career while catching 65 passes for 788 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
