Bio

Karim Benzema was born in Lyon, France on 19 December 1987. A talented centre forward, who is also capable of playing on the wing when necessary, he is known for his power, technical skills and prolific goalscoring and is considered by many to be one of Europe's elite strikers.

Benzema began his youth career with local side Bron Terraillon, but joined Lyon in 1996 and made his way through the club's ranks. He eventually made his debut for the first team in 2004, playing a role in Ligue 1 title wins in 2004–05, 2005–06 and 2006–07. The 2007-08 season marked his true breakthrough into the first team, as he became an integral part of another league title success, scoring 20 league goals and 31 goals in all competitions. As a result, he was named as the Ligue 1 Player of the Year. His good performances continued in 2008-09 and in the summer of 2009, he completed a move to Real Madrid.

Although he initially struggled to settle in Madrid and find form, he was able to score 26 goals in all competitions during his second season and helped the team to win the 2010-11 Copa del Rey. Gradually, he saw off competition from Gonzalo Higuaín and became the team's first choice striker. Ahead of the 2011-12 season, Benzema attended a specialised performance clinic, where he lost weight and increased muscle mass. The benefits were obvious and he experienced his best ever goalscoring season, managing 32 goals in all competitions, as Real Madrid finished as La Liga champions. In January 2014, Benzema scored his 100th goal for the club.

On the international stage, Benzema represented France at various youth levels, before making his first appearance for the senior side in 2007. He has since earned over 50 caps for his country. In both 2011 and 2012, he was voted as French Player of the Year by France Football magazine.
