Bio

Keenan Allen is a second-year wide receiver for the San Diego Chargers. He was an All-Pac 12 First-Team selection in 2011 at the University of California and finished second in 2013 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year balloting.

Early Years

Allen was born in Greensboro, NC on April 27, 1992 and attended Northern Guilford High School. He started on both sides of the ball for the football team, playing wide receiver and cornerback. He was selected as a high school All-American following his senior season and participated in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He was listed as a five-star recruit according to Rivals.com and ranked as the top defensive back in his recruiting class.

University of California

Instead of staying close to home, Allen chose to continue playing football at the University of California. Even though he was heavily recruited as a defensive back, he became an instant starter at wide receiver for the Golden Bears. He started 11 games as a true freshman, tallying 46 receptions for 490 yards and five touchdowns. As a sophomore, he became one of the country’s most-feared receivers, hauling in a career-high 98 receptions for 1,343 yards and six touchdowns. He wasn’t quite as productive during his junior season, but he decided to declare for the 2013 NFL Draft after catching a school-record 205 passes during his tenure in Berkeley.

San Diego Chargers

A knee sprain prevented Allen from showcasing his talents at the NFL Scouting Combine, and he showed rust at California’s Pro Day workout. A slow 40 yard dash time lowered his stock, and he was selected by the San Diego Chargers with the 76th overall pick in the third round. After signing a four-year deal worth $2.81 million, he struggled through camp and didn’t make his debut until Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. After a tough start, he finished the 2013 season leading all rookies with 71 receptions and led San Diego with 1,046 receiving yards. He was named NFL Rookie of the Year by the Sporting News and finished second in AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.
