About Khazar Lankaran

Xəzər Lənkəran Futbol Klubu, usually known more simply as Khazar Lankaran, was first established in 2004 by the businessman, Mubariz Mansimov. Nicknamed Gəmiçilər, which translates to 'The Shipbuilders', the club have made a rapid rise to prominence within Azerbaijan, largely due to the financial power Mansimov possesses. As a result of the team's financial capabilities, they were initially dubbed the 'Caucasian Chelsea' by the media.

In the team's short history to date, they have established an intense rivalry with Neftçi Baku. Known as Böyük Oyun, or 'The Great Game', the rivalry between the sides is one of the most important fixtures on the country's football calendar and is largely centred around the two clubs competing for major honours. However, in addition, the rivalry has a geographic basis, with Khazar Lankaran representing the south of Azerbaijan and Neftçi Baku representing the north.

The 2006-07 season brought about huge success for the side, as Khazar Lankaran won the Premier League title and the Azerbaijan Cup, in order to complete a domestic double. The following season, they were able to once again lift the Azerbaijan Cup and then the team enjoyed a third success in the competition in the 2010–11 season. As a result of their performances in domestic competitions, Khazar Lankaran have competed in the UEFA Europa League on several occasions and appeared in the qualifying rounds of the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League.

The list of notable players to play for the team includes names like Samir Aliyev, Zaur Ramazanov and Ivan Tsvetkov, all of whom were prolific in front of goal.

Khazar Lankaran's home matches are held at the Lankaran City Stadium, which is known by supporters as the 'Arena of Storms'. The venue, which first opened its doors in 2006, is currently able to hold a maximum of 15,000 supporters.
