Kiko Alonso completed his first season with the Buffalo Bills in 2013, starting all 16 games and finishing with 159 tackles, two sacks and four interceptions. Alonso, an agile linebacker and capable pass-rusher, signed a four-year deal worth a reported $4.3 million on May 15, 2013. He was slated to compete for a starting spot in Buffalo’s new 4-3 scheme in 2014, but he’s likely to miss the entire 2014 season after tearing his ACL last week in OTAs.
Early Years & College
Alonso was born in Newton, Mass. on August 14, 1990. He attended Los Gatos High in Los Gatos, Calif. where he finished his senior season with 150 tackles. Alonso, a three-star recruit, played his college football at the University of Oregon. At Oregon, he played mostly middle linebacker, earning Defensive Player of the Game honors in the 2012 Rose Bowl. He left Oregon with 144 tackles, 3.5 sacks and six interceptions in 37 games despite missing the majority of his sophomore campaign due to a knee injury.
Buffalo drafted Alonso in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft (46th overall) and inserted him into the starting lineup in Week 1. Alonso burst onto the scene in his pro debut, racking up nine tackles and forcing a fumble. He earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month accolades for September and the Pro Football Writers of America named Alonso the Defensive Rookie of the Year.
