Knowshon Moreno is entering his first season with the Miami Dolphins after spending the previous five years with the Denver Broncos. Moreno, a shifty, slashing type of running back, is coming off a breakout 2013 campaign, when he rushed for a career-high 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns, while helping lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl. On March 27, 2014, he inked a one-year contract worth $3 million.
Early Years & College
Moreno was born in Belford, N.J., on July 16, 1987. He attended Middletown South High where he rushed for 6,268 yards and 128 touchdowns, while leading the school to three Central Jersey Group III championships. Moreno, an EA Sports All-American, ran for 1,629 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior. After graduating, Moreno went to the University of Georgia where he red-shirted in 2006 before exploding on the scene and amassing 1,334 rushing yards. In two seasons at Georgia, Moreno accumulated 2,734 rushing yards, 645 receiving yards and 32 total touchdowns, while twice earning first-team All-SEC honors (2007, 2008).
The Broncos selected Moreno in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft (12th overall). Moreno was largely considered the best running back available in the 2009 draft class and entered the regular season with huge expectations. He played in 16 games, starting nine, as a rookie and rushed for 947 yards, following that up with 779 yards in 2010. Moreno was forced into a platoon role, with Willis McGahee, before an ACL injury ended his 2011 season. He returned to prominence in 2013, setting a franchise mark by becoming the first Broncos player to accumulate more than 1,000 rushing yards and more than 500 receiving yards in a single season.
The Dolphins scooped up Moreno after he was released, largely due to salary cap constraints in Denver. In June 2014, Moreno underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and was placed on the physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list. He has been relegated to side work in the early days of 2014 training camp and his status for Week 1 remains uncertain.
