Liverpool have announced that Manchester City defender Kolo Toure will join the club on a free transfer on July 1.

The 32-year-old will arrive at Anfield when his contract with Manchester City expires having signed an agreement in principle with the Merseyside club.

The Ivorian is expected to add experience and depth to the club's defensive options, particularly after the retirement of Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher.

Toure initially moved to England in 2002 with Arsenal and made 321 appearances for the club over more than seven years, helping them to two Premier League titles and three FA Cup successes.

He subsequently moved to Manchester City for 16 million pounds in July 2009 and was immediately installed as club captain.

Toure made 102 appearances for City and added another Premier League title to his glittering CV.
The defender has won more than 100 caps for the Ivory Coast and has also captained his country.
